Account Security 101
Yes I do realize that there are many articles that cover account security and that by know you know exactly what to do to keep your account save. But in saying that lets have a look at some of the factors which can breach your security in a little depth and maybe add in a 1 or 2 new threats.
1 – Virus’s –Now everyone knows that virus’ are bad but how many of us have virus software of your PC’s honestly. I agree the prise of these packages range from Free to nearly 100 Euro so it is not inexpensive to keep your details and PC save and even the free options do not protect against most of the major threats and most certainly will not protect you on Warcraft. The solution is simple check the market are see what software suits your needs and PC requirements. If you are not sure just ask someone either in game or a PC technician and they will help. Personally I don’t think you could go wrong with BitDefender. The gamesafe edition is only $29.95 and I have yet to see it slow down my Windows version on WoW.
2 – Gold Buying – Well guys if you don’t know this one by know then where have you been. Buying gold means turning over your account details to someone you don’t know. Bad idea = yes. Some of the time after you have received your gold your account may get hacked and any gold or gear maybe taken off and sold on your character by the same people who sold you the gold. So DO NOT BUY GOLD. Always ends back and is not in good game playing either.
3 – Authenticator – Secure your account with a Blizzard official Authenticator. They are only 6 euro +P and P from the Blizzard store and add that extra amount of security to your account. The code changes every couple of minutes and only the same authenticator that is linking with your account can be used to access it. This means no one else will be able to get into your account in theory. Don’t know about you but I have never heard of anyone getting hacked with an authenticator on their account.
4 – Visual Voicemails – Now this is one you may not have heard of. The new visual voicemail service is a great asset to people who dont have time to listen to loads of voicemails but on the downside there has been certain speculation as to who or what converts these voicemails. Most companies do say that it is a computer that converts them but investigations by news organizations show it’s more likely via human interaction and that means that if you are talking account details over voicemail you may not know who else is listening in on that conversation so the simple solution is never mention you account details on voicemail as it is becoming a real and viable threat to your account.
5 – Friends – Now we all trust our friends but if you share your account with them on another computer do you trust them to be as careful as you protecting your details, gear etc. This is possibly one of the biggest pitfalls in the game with people as you cannot control people like in the game so again the best way to avoid this is simply don’t do it. Then you will have no worries and less sleepless nights like we know you have.
6 – Password – Never give your password out to anyone even if they say they are a Blizzard employee. Blizzard have always stated that they will never ask you for your password simply as they can access your account without it. Remember they do own the game so never ever ever give anyone your password.
Other than that it’s a simple case of be careful with links not from Blizzard and if you’re not sure tell Blizzard or ask them on the forums or customer service. They will tell you right away whether it is genuine or not. Well hope this covered some new and some old threats to your game and accounts.
